BACKGROUND AND RATIONALE
On 20 November 2019, the Head of State, His Excellency Paul Biya ordered special recruitment of five hundred (500) translators and translator interpreters into the public service. This special recruitment to be conducted for five years at the rate of one-hundred (100) translators and translator/interpreters became effective last year with the recruitment of graduates into the Public Service. And given the Law No. 2019/019 of 24 December 2019 on the promotion of official languages in Cameroon as well as the attribution of the Translation Unit in the Ministry of Secondary Education: translation of routine documents, controlling the quality of translations and setting up a terminological database relating to Secondary Education (the 2012 Organisational chart of MINESC) and the necessity of service.The Ministry of Secondary Education has received this year ten (10) translators newly posted, in line with the above considerations. These professionals have all completed their training in translation schools and are sufficiently qualified to contribute to meeting the country’s needs as far as translation is concerned. However, there is a need to adapt the training which they have already received to the Public Service context, especially as applied to the Ministry of Secondary Education, to better equip them for the tasks that await them. It should be recalled, that the Head of State’s decision stems from the need to staff government services with sufficient qualified translation and interpretation professionals given the need to produce official documents in English and French, on the one hand, and his constant concern to promote employment among Cameroonian youth, on the other, considering the importance of translation in nation-building in a bi-cultural context like ours.

OBJECTIVESThe objectives of this workshop are given below.General objectiveTo ensure that translation staff, especially translators newly posted at the Ministry of Secondary Education are inducted into professional translation in the public service in general and the Ministry of Secondary Education, in particular.
2. Specific objectivesThe specific objectives of this workshop are as follows:to educate Translators newly posted to MINESEC on the translation process in the civil service and MINESEC;to introduce translators newly posted to specific concepts related to the civil service;to raise awareness on the need to ease the standardisation of terms at MINESEC, scanning of terms, identification and extraction of terms, the establishment of terminology files, data recording on terminology;to carry out discussions in view of standardising terminology relating to key and recurring activities and concepts in the public service and MINESEC.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES:Translators newly posted understand the translation process in the civil service and MINESEC;translators master specific concepts relating to the civil service and MINESEC;translators are reminded of the need to standardise terminology;Terminology relating to key and recurring activities and concepts in the public service and MINESEC is standardised. METHODOLOGY: Presentations by experts in translation/terminology followed by Q&A sessions; discussions;adoption of standardised terms.
