NATIONAL FINALS OF FENASSCO LEAGUE A GAMES: MVOMEKA'A DELIVERS ON THE PROMISES OF A SUCCESSFUL BET

This was witnessed during the official ceremony to launch the national finals of FENASSCO LEAGUE A GAMES, held at the Paul Biya multi-purpose complex of Mvomeka'a, on Sunday, 31 July 2022.

The ceremony which brought together over half a dozen of cabinet ministers was rich in pomp and fanfare with blessings from the custodians of the tradition from the South Region. The epic ritual performed at the opening of the ceremony reassured both officials and athletes from the ten regions of Cameroon of a competition free of accidents and other casualties.

This august aureole was further magnified by, Christian Mebiam, the Mayor of Meyomessala, in his welcome address. He thanked Prof Nalova Lyonga for choosing the mythical town of Mvomeka'a to host the 22nd Edition of the national finals of FENASSCO League “A” Games. He invited athletes to express their sporting talents  with friendliness drawing on the charisma of His Excellency President Paul Biya, a distinguished son of Mvomeka'a.

To Minister Nalova Lyonga, the choice of Mvomeka'a is God given and deserves everyone's attention. As a matter of fact, from 30 July to 6 August 2022, Mvomeka'a will draw the Nation's attention for a full week through the cultural and sporting jamboree FENASSCO League “A” Games happen to be.

The parade of ten  delegations packed with messages designed around the theme of the Games, School games for peace and unity in diversity, the spectacular cultural parade performed by the youth of Sangmelima as well as the female football encounter between the East Region represented by GHS Belabo, and the South Region represented by GBHS Sangmelima, are harbingers of a more stunning come together of all the sons and daughters of Cameroon.

The 22nd Edition of the national finals of FENASSCO League “A” Games bring together 1940 athletes drawn  from Secondary Schools and Teacher's Training Colleges nationwide. They will compete in 12 sporting events, including track and field events, arm wrestling, Badminton, basketball, football, gymnastics, handball, judo, wrestlings, table tennis, volleyball and paralympic table tennis.

UPGRADING AND SUSTAINING DISTANCE EDUCATION

MINESUP- MINESEC agree to mutualise their resources to ameliorate the Cameroonian Education System through continuous Digitalization.

This is the outcome of an inter-ministerial working session co-chaired by the Minister of State, Minister of Higher Education Prof. Jacques FAME NDONGO and the Minister of Secondary Education, Professor Nalova LYONGA on Friday, 24 June 2022 at the Cameroon Universities Network and Digital Development Centre in Yaoundé.

During this meeting the two members of government acknowledged the efforts the State has made so far in the digitalization of education in Cameroon through the Cameroon Universities Network and Digital Development Centre and MINESEC’s Distance Education Centre and sort for ways to mutualise their efforts for continuous digitalization from Secondary to Higher Education.

At the end of the working session, both ministers jointly decided to collaborate in mutualising the methods of the two administrations as far as the digital transformation of the Cameroon Education System is concerned. The effective cooperation between the Cameroon Universities Network and Digital Development Centre and MINESEC’s Distance Education Centre, to build the capacities of Secondary School Teachers in Digital Pedagogic Technology through all the Departments of Computer Sciences in HTTCs and HTTTCs, as well as use the infrastructure and resources of both Ministries with a view to improving and modernizing the educational system.

Finally, the two members of government took the engagement to regularly evaluate this new collaboration in order to substantially improve and modernize digital education within their two ministerial departments.

It is important to state here that, this falls in line with the implementation of the very high directives of the Head of State, His Excellency Paul Biya on the digitalization of the educational system in Cameroon enshrined in the National Development Strategy (NDS30).

Curriculum improvement, Distance evaluation, Development of virtual laboratories featured among the key topics discussed during the audience the Secondary Education Minister granted Yao Ydo, the Director of UNESCO International Bureau of Education (UNESCO-IBE), on Friday, 17 June 2022.

The Director of the UNESCO Institute specialising in education quality issues met with the officials of the Ministry of Secondary Education to explore cooperation avenues for improving quality education at the secondary education level. A wide range of education-related issues were discussed during the meeting.

UNESCO-IBE wants to share its knowledge in the areas of contextualized curriculum design, capacity-building for stakeholders in curriculum development, development of tools for distance evaluation. The institute equally wishes to have a consultative reflexion with MINESEC on the integration of new technologies into the classroom. This will help develop 21^st-century skills in learners and enable them take full advantage of their ingenuity and fit-in in our complex and fast-changing world.

MINESEC embraced the cooperation proposal from IBE and expressed interest in working with the UNESCO Institute in the fields of curriculum transformation, distance education, distance evaluation and development virtual laboratories. Other areas of interest, including the development of Blue curricula (for ocean literacy and knowledge), development of condensed educational programmes to be used within three months in case of emergencies, are equally contemplated.

About 147,000 Candidates Are Looking Forward to Higher Education.

The written phase of the General Baccalaureat examination for the 2021-2022 session started off nationwide on 30 May 2022. It is to ascertain the hitch-free organisation and conduct of this examination that Secondary Education Minister, Prof Nalova Lyonga, led by the Governor of the Centre Region, Naseri Paul Bea, undertook visits to some examination centres in Yaounde.

College Jean Tabi, Government Bilingual High School Emana, Government Bilingual High School Essos, Government High School Ahala and Les Bambis Lay Private Bilingual College are the five schools visited by the ministerial delegation in Yaounde, on day one of the written phase of the General Baccalaureat examination for the 2021-2022 session.

In each of these examination centres, Prof Nalova Lyonga who was flanked by Boniface Bayaola, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Secondary Education in charge of Teacher’s Training and Prof Fabien Nkot, Secretary-General of the said Ministry, checked the good organisation and conduct of the exam. They enquired the availability of composition materials and paid special attention to compliance with examination standards as well as to the respect for both barrier measures and Clean School requirements. 

At College Jean Tabi, MINESEC’s officials were satisfied with the organisation and visited the cosy computer lab that will accommodate candidates for the practicals in Computer Science. In GBHS Essos and in all other examination centres, the Minister was briefed on the sanitary and security provisions made to ensure a hitch-free conduct of the exam throughout.

Particularly concerned with the case of GHS Ahala which saw its premises flooded following the heavy rains over the city, the Minister was appeased to see the 558 candidates safely accommodated at Institut MAK-MBE, a well located college nearby.

The ministerial visit ended at the headquarters of the Office du Baccalaureat to confirm the effective operation of the technical infrastructure. Regarding the issue of payment, Etienne Minkoulou, Director General of the Office du Baccalaureat, gave assurance that to date “the full payroll has been prepared and the first cash transfers are being made to the respective accounts for the effective payment of the stakeholders in the 342 examination centres dispatched all over the national territory.

2022 EXAMINATION SESSION 

Professor Nalova Lyonga satisfied with the organisation and conduct of Common Entrance examinations

MINESEC boss satisfied with the hitch-free conduct of the Common Entrance examinations following a tour in three (3) examinations centres in Yaounde, on 17 May 2022. 

The Minister of Secondary Education, in the company of the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Secondary Education (MINESEC) in charge of teacher training (SEESEN), Boniface Bayaola, and the Secretary-General, Prof Fabien Nkot, visited three examinations centres in the Mfoundi Division to ascertain the smooth conduct of the Common Entrance Examinations organised by the Department of Examinations and Certification (DECC) of the Ministry of Secondary Education.

Despite the heavy downpour the capital city Yaounde woke up to on Tuesday, 17 May 2022, candidates and examiners were present in all the three examination centres visited by the ministerial delegation in College La Retraite, Government Girl’s Technical College (CETIF) Yaounde and Lycée Genéral Leclerc. 

In each of these examination centres, the Minister and her entourage sought to know how smooth examinations were going on, paying special attention to the provisions made for impaired candidates, compliance with examination standards, as well as to the respect for both barriers measures and Clean School requirements. The chiefs of the examination centres confirmed that no candidate was slammed a sanction for coming late, owing to the bad weather over the capital city.

CETIF Yaounde is accommodating 3 candidates with disabilities out of the 345 candidates present. Meanwhile in College La Retraite only 6 candidates were recorded absent out of the 437 candidates registered. At Lycée Général Leclerc, 749 candidates were present out of the 777 registered. 

For the records, unconsolidated statistics for the 2022 session of the Common Entrance examinations organised by DECC stand at 255,584 candidates, including, 171,360 candidates for the Common Entrance into General Secondary Education and 83,981 candidates for the Common Entrance into Technical Secondary Education.

  The Distance Education Centre set up by the Ministry of Secondary Education under the leadership of the Minister of Secondary Education, Professor Nalova Lyonga, to preserve the right of each Cameroonian child to quality education everywhere and all the time was recently a highlight at a training session held in this Center. This information and discussion session took place between the Education, Vocational Training and Youth Commission of the National Assembly and the Ministry of Secondary Education (MINESEC).

  Minister Lyonga escorted the honorable members of Parliament to visit the Distance Education Center before the proper start of the round table discussion. The Minister showcased the different facilities of this center and explained its creation which sprouted from the outburst of the COVID-19 pandemic. She acknowledged the assistance of various partners as well as the mobilization of the Government at the behest of the Head of State in its creation to ensure that Cameroon’s educational system does not suffer from this pandemic.  

Impressed and overwhelmed by the innovation the educational system has experienced through this center, the members of Parliament congratulated the Minister and her collaborators on how well they have succeeded in managing the facility with the limited funds allocated to the Ministry of Secondary Education.

  After haven experienced first-hand the activities carried out by MINESEC, the members of Parliament unanimously agreed that the budget allocated to the Ministry of Secondary Education deserved an increment to facilitate their activities especially the Distance Education Center.

At press time, Hon. NJUME Peter had this to say: “We cannot rely on UNESCO all the time for financial help. It is true that during the past years, we were talking of financial constrains caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the hosting of AFCON. I think that this time around, the government should be able to know that education is primordial for an emergent country like Cameroon, so they have to improve or step up the budgetary allocation for the Ministry of Secondary Education.”

Tedonjio Feukeng Kabrel, Foteping Kuiate Johann Gregore and Ntombi Mpah Pauline from Government Technical High School Douala-Bassa are the laureates of the second edition of the International Entrepreneurship Competition held in Rabat, Morocco from 31 March to 5 April 2022 before Morocco and Benin.

The three teenagers together with their mentors and supervisors were offered a solemn reception by Prof Nalova Lyonga, Minister of Secondary Education, on 18 April 2022 at the Distance Education Centre following their brilliant victory abroad. This was in the presence of Boniface Bayaola, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Secondary Education in charge of Teacher’s Training.

During the event, the young entrepreneurs presented their award-winning electronic wristband. The device which consists of a printed circuit-board can be activated in time of distress to call for help. The project idea was developed within the framework of the “Schule-Z” programme, an initiative which seeks to nurture and build soft and entrepreneurial skills in school-going youths at the secondary level.

The innovative electronic wristband project borne by these budding entrepreneurs caught the eye of the jury of the competition. They were granted scholarships that will enable them to fine-tune their entrepreneurial skills in one of the prestigious Moroccan Universities.

Secondary Education Minister equally acknowledged the promoter of “Schule-Z” programme for his efforts in bringing in the missing link between school and the business world. Proud of this achievement, Prof Nalova Lyonga encouraged students to tap on all technological facilities that are made available to them and to adhere to discipline, hardwork and creativity in order to honour the huge investments the Government of the Republic is making to secure their future.
